Since the new breeding goal has been launched in 2014 in female lines Large White and Landrace, the average weight of piglets at birth and the homogeneity of weight of piglets at birth are included in the breeding goal. These two criteria are taken into account in order to select gilts and boars, which in parallel to the increase of prolificacy, maintain or improve the average birth weight o piglets and the homogeneity of weight of piglets. In no case the increase of prolificacy shall induce a decrease in average birth weight or an increase of the heterogeneity of weight of piglets.
The table below shows the evolution, in Large White breed, of
- the average birth weight of piglets
- the homogeneity of birth weight of piglets within a litter.
|
Number of weighted piglets |
Average individual birth weight |
Standard deviation of individual birth weight |
2015 |
50 487 |
1.379 kg |
0.287 kg |
2014 |
51 671 |
1.372 kg |
0.286 kg |
2013 |
47 467 |
1.379 kg |
0.287 kg |
These data confirm the full efficiency of the breeding goal. The increase of prolificacy did not get negative impact neither on the average birth weight nor in the homogeneity of birth weight.
As usual, NUCLEUS will be present to SPACE 2016 from September 13 to 16 in Rennes (France), Hall 8, booth A24. We invite you to meet us during this fair.
The first aim of a breeding scheme is to define the criteria to improve and then to identify and to select within its purebred population the animals improving these criteria. The identification of these improver animals enable to carry out genetic progress. The best boars selected and placed in artificial insemination center enable the diffusion of the genetic progress.
In female lines, the improvement of Maternal Qualities has been defined has priority and in particular the increase of prolificacy.
The tables below show the genetic progress done in the selection farms Large White and Landrace from 2012 to 2015.

The evolution of prolificacy in Large White and Landrace shows the efficiency of the new breeding goal and of the breeding methods applied daily.
70 boars NUCLEUS Landrace boars are present in artificial insemination centre in France. These boars are used for the renewing of pure breed GGP Landrace sows of selection farms but also and mainly for the production of F1 sows by insemination of Large White GP sows on multiplication farms.
The table below details the average performances of the mothers of these 70 boars present in French AIC on the 1st of January 2016.

Performances of the mothers of these 70 boars are simply remarkable!
The quality of NUCLEUS breeding evaluation has been recognized by international Pig Topics.
One detailed and well illustrated article has been published on the famous pig review.

One year ago, in the news of the 12 of January 2015, we showed the first results of feed efficiency of Pietrain boars controlled with feeding station control situated directly on the selection farm.
One year later, these first results are confirmed and even improved.

With an average feed efficiency of 2,17 during the period 30kg - 115 kg, the NUCLEUS Pietrain Boar is a guarantee to improve your global efficiency and thus your production cost!
NUCLEUS started in 2015 to measure the intra-muscular fat content in its entire pure breed Duroc population, gilts and boars.
This measure is done at the same time that on farm testing, it means at five months old. Thus, in Duroc criteria measured on farm are now:
Weight
Muscle depth
Backfat thickness
Intra-muscular fat on loin
This measure of intra-muscular fat on live animal enables NUCLEUS to identify and to select for specific markets breeders having the highest intra-muscular fat content.
NUCLEUS : to meet your request.
During last term of 2015, NUCLEUS exported 1000 breeding pigs for a selection farm of the Company Henan Cooperl Xinda Pig breeding situated in the Henan. This company is a joined venture between Henan Xinda Muye and Cooperl.
Cooperl, is the biggest French pig Cooperative, producing, slaughtering and meat processing over 6 millions slaughter pigs per year. Highly appreciated for its genetic potential and its high sanitary status, this exportation of Nucleus breeding pigs (the 2nd for the year 2015) increases the presence of NUCLEUS Genetic in China.
NUCLEUS company has successfully exported 1000 purebred animals (Large White, Landrace, Pietrain and Duroc) to China. The animals arrived at the Zhengzhou airport on Wednesday, October 28th. Then, they were transferred to the Cooperl-Xinda Breeding Farm, which is under air filtration. It is a new step for NUCLEUS Genetic in China...
